My Thoughts In Your Head
My Thoughts in Your Head reflects my ongoing exploration of memory, displacement, and the fluidity of time through ephemeral mediums. In this piece, I merge personal history with architectural space by projecting intimate images—letters from my mother, flowers from her garden—onto objects from an abandoned department store, which now houses the art school where I studied in Margate. The building, once a Woolworths, carries its own narrative of loss, having closed down during the 2008 financial crisis. This convergence of my personal memories with the residual artifacts of the store creates a space where the lines between past and present blur.
The installation uses projection, a temporal medium, to challenge the idea of permanence. The work exists in a transient state, shifting between presence and absence as the images flicker across the room. One moment they’re there, the next, they vanish, echoing the way memories surface and fade. This contrast between the real objects—glasses, crockery, chandeliers—and the fleeting projections allows for a dialogue between the tangible and the intangible, the permanent and the temporary.
What ties these elements together is the idea of re-looking, of re-situating both objects and memories in new contexts, giving them fresh meanings. The installation invites the viewer into a ghost-like world where stories, both personal and collective, intersect, offering a fleeting but resonant encounter with the past and the spaces it inhabits.
